A bit of my story…

Rooted in healing. Made to inspire confidence.

Boozhoo! I’m Donna - a proud member of Brokenhead Ojibway Nation in Manitoba, and the artist, the mother, the auntie, and the determined (sometimes stubborn) woman behind Ma’iingan Designs.

For over 2 years, I talked about learning how to make belts. I dreamed about it, overthought it, talked myself in and out of it…and kept telling myself “one day.”
Then in March 2025, I finally touched belt leather for the first time - and something in my mind clicked.

People assume I’ve been doing this forever…nope. But when that first blade touched that first piece of hide? It felt like Creator said, “Okay lady…this is yours.”

Even though I didn’t start carving until later, my spirit, teachings, and identity were shaped during the 14 years I lived in Wabaseemoong. That time grounded me. Taught me patience, humility, and how to keep going even when life gets heavy.

Leatherwork became part of my healing. It gave me a space to put my energy when my mind wouldn’t slow down. It reminded me that I can create something beautiful even when life isn’t perfect. Every cut into the hide, I started trusting myself more - not just in this craft, but in who I am becoming.

And that’s what I hope Ma’iingan Designs gives you, too.

Because this isn’t just about belts. It’s about what happens when you finally choose yourself. When you stop waiting for “the right time” and start with what you have. When you follow the pull in your spirit even when you’re scared, even if you’re new, even if you don’t feel ready.

Everything I create - from finished belts to belt-making kits - is made with the same intention:
to remind you that your hands can learn, your confidence can grow, and your passion can lead to something real.

Now Ma’iingan Designs is live - and I’m proud, I’m nervous, and I’m so grateful you’re here. If you’ve ever been sitting on a dream for “someday,” I hope my story is your sign.

Start small. Start messy. Start scared. Just start.
